Who we Are
"Everybody needs a little down home charm"
Q & A with the founder of CS:
a previous sales rep in the software industry, launching CS must be quite a
change! What was your inspiration?
Do you have memories of when this passion began?
After I graduated from Auburn University in 1990 (War Eagle!), I was not making very much money at all. I had wicker furniture and all hand me down stuff from my parents. One night, I went to an art gallery opening in Montgomery, Alabama just to to gaze at the beautiful art; because I knew I couldn't afford anything in there. However, I encountered a piece of art that moved me to the extent that I knew I simply had to have it. So, I placed myself on a payment plan that allowed me to purchase it; paying monthly installments until I could actually take it home.
How did you choose the name CS for your site?
I was born and raised in the south, and love the "certainty" with which I feel proud to be a southerner! I've traveled extensively with my career, and have been blessed to have experienced many fabulous places. However, I am always so happy to get home to the south! And, of course I love all things southern; including grits, and sweet tea (sometimes with a splash of vodka in it!).
Although you were in sales, does launching a business seem daunting?
I grew up around a family retail business since early childhood. My dad ran two of the local feed and farm supply stores in rural Alabama for 40 years--what could be more southern than that? Any business venture that would enable me to follow in my Dad's footsteps would be an honor. I am so passionate about Certainly Southern, that it had to happen.
How do you go about deciding upon what items you would like to share via CS?
Regardless of where someone lives, I think that a person's home reflects who they are and how they choose to live their life. "Southern" can be not only a place, but also a state of mind. I truly have a love affair with all things beautiful, as do many other people. As a southerner, what I find beautiful speaks to me in a specific way. It is not about accumulating "things"; but rather creating a space to exist where you are surrounded by beauty. This can be achieved whether you live in downtown Atlanta, upstate New York, the Pacific Northwest, or Central Texas!
Many of our things are made right here in the good ole South. I also include other things that aren't made in the south, yet are beautiful and should be included in every southern household. It is all about creating our space, while celebrating southern flair.
Is there anything else you would like to
share about CS?
I have carefully curated every piece that is shared on CS, and would be grateful if you would give me a shout and let me know what you think...
